NTA Western Convention report
I was asked to report on how the NTA convention went in
Montana. The convention was held in Lewistown Montana. It is a fun and beautiful place to have a convention. The weather was really pleasant and it was just a nice time of year.
My family and I took a couple of extra days to get there and to get back home. We were able to see a lot of nice country as well as a lot of wildlife.
It seemed that the numbers of people that attended were down. However, the demos were well attended and there were few seats left that were not filled. I felt that the demos were excellent. I learned a lot of tips that I will try out this upcoming year. I think that maybe I recruited a couple of trappers that did demos to come to our convention next year.
There were a lot of vendors as well as tail gaiters that were selling about anything that you could want. As always there was the smell that goes along with a trapper’s convention (Lots of good lures and baits).
At the banquet they had a fur fashion show. Looking at those beautiful coats makes me appreciate the beauty of the furbearers that I catch even more. They had a good meal as well as a successful auction. At the auction they drew the UTA raffle for some traps. What was interesting about it was that earlier in the day Josh Lodge asked me when the drawing was going to be because he was going to win it. Well you guessed it when they drew they drew Josh’s name. Way to go! I would love some luck like that.
I want to thank my daughter Amber and son Cody for running the UTA booth. They did a good job and sold a lot of tickets as well as merchandise. While I am on my kids, they represented Utah trappers well by winning first place in the ladies and 12 to 17 year old trap setting contests. Of course it became a long ride home for me having to be reminded constantly that I did not win anything.
It was a fun convention for me. I was able to meet with a lot of my friends from all around the country. I feel very blessed to know such wonderful people and to be able to call them my friends.
Next year the Western Convention will be held in Wyoming. I can hardly wait.
Until next time,
Stan Bassett

I had to leave early just as dutch oven dinners were getting done. Man, did I miss a feast.
I did stop and catch one of the most beautiful fish of my life on the way home. Other items of associations news are:
The UTA has reached an agreement with the DWR on the purposed otter plan.
The two most positive points are that we will be trapping otter in 2011 on a draw basis on the Green river Drainage and the D.W.R. has agreed to use the least restrictive trapping restrictions possible on all other otter transplant areas in the state.

Well here I am again sitting in front of this computer trying to write another President’s report, which is kind of stupid because as President you are allowed to delegate. But, someone told me if I did that, then it would not be the Presidents report. In the future I will try to find a way around that technicality.
We have been kind of busy this last month or so. I have been writing letters to the D.W.R. about the Otter introduction, the non-protected species issue, and the problem we had with them tagging cats at our fur sale this year. All of these letters seemed to fall on deaf ears. However we did receive some advice on how to proceed with getting these issues resolved from the head of the D.N.R. and we will be following up on this in the near future.
The 2010 fur sale was a good sale. As you can see by comparing this years stats to last years
(on this page down lower), the prices were good , and better than some had feared due to the economy.
Kevin wants everyone that helped to know how much the officers (and other members) appreciate all the hard work they did. There were just too many to name individually, but you know who you are.
The donated fur/scholarship program did very well and by adding a little $ from last year there is enough for 2 $1000 scholarships.
If you have a family member that qualifies for the scholarship, keep checking on the bottom of this page for updated applications and other information. I expect more info from Stacy Dew any time now.
It was decided to hold the summer campout up on Boulder Mountain in the last of June. More details will be coming on this.
Get yer shootin eye all tuned up. Ronnie Hunt says there will be a place to shoot there.
If any members know of a veteran or family of a veteran that needs some assistance or that can use some help, please contact one of the officers.
For me at least, the best part of any UTA function is seeing old friends and making new ones. I didn't realize what a good story teller Kent Fowden is. When you get him and Mike Pay together you better be wearing your waders.
Thanks to those who donated furs for our scholarship fund: Aaron Carter, Gary Slot, Chase Randall, Duane Hunt, Ronnie Hunt, Justin Hunt, Dillon Shepard, Jason Bailey, Brent Bailey, Sanford Randall, Kent Fowden, Clay Oliverson, Sheldon Randall, Kent Butler, David Bronson.
Thanks again to all those that helped in any way.
Theron
