Presidents  Report

Well another trapping season is underway and with the great weather we’ve had I hope you all

Managed to get some traps set November was a month of all kinds of weather from snow and freezing

To 65 plus what a range . The coyote contest for the youth was another great success and I thank all that

Helped and participated. I have been inundated with phone calls from a lot of people that are new to the   trapping  sport and a lot of interest in becoming members of the UTA this is truly a good thing.

New and more membership in the UTA brings new blood new ideas and increases our strength

If you are a trapper and not a member of our organization or a member of the NTA you need

To become one soon , don’t’ sit back and let someone else fight the battle sign up and let numbers

Speak because number s do  speak.

The planning for the fur sale is ongoing there is a lot of work behind the scene to make this happen

I know between work and trapping Stan is probably going nuts it takes a lot of coordination to pull

This off . The market indicators show that we should have another good year for fur sales I hope that they hold true. As a trapper I like to follow the market closely to see where to get the best dollar for my

Fur and over   30 years I have learned that our fur sale has consistently proven to be one of the best

Sources  to sell fur. I am not saying that the local fur buyers aren’t a good out let I am saying that time and time again the competition for furs at our sale will prove to get the best money for fur possible

If those trappers that haven’t tried our sale would give it a try I guarantee they would see results

In higher prices even considering the percentage they pay to sell. This was proven to me years ago

By trappers that were in the know about fur prices trappers that had to know because that was the

Way they made a living. I encourage all the trappers to give it a try the dates are set for the 10 11 12 of

February in Nephi Utah at the fair grounds . This sale takes a lot of work to put on and if you are interested  in helping out I encourage you to volunteer to help doing so brings satisfaction in helping

Fellow trappers market their fur and will also shed light on what really goes on with the marketing

Of fur it is a bigger process than most would comprehend should you feel like you want to volunteer

Please get a hold of one of the UTA officers we would love to have your help.

Speaking of the sale, time and time again we here why didn’t I get the same dollar for my fur as so and so my furs were as good as his (or hers) well that might be and might not be the case there can be a lot of variables remember fur is fur there can be geographical difference seasonal difference and the big one

Fur prep I have seen a lot of high dollar cats go cheap because of the way they have been cared for if

You don’t know how to put up your fur please call and ask most trappers  would  be glad to give some pointers we always have some type of seminar on fur prep at the convention and would be glad to arrange for a specific seminar if you would let one of us know.   Well enough rambling for now may

Your sets stay dry and your stretchers full  hope to see at the fur sale

Fur Sale 2012

I just got back from the Utah Convention. It was a really good time. I think that if I could attend one of them a month I would live to be 100 years old.

The fur sale is set for the same time as last year. When you read this report trapping season will be well on its way. I hope that you will bring your fur to the UTA sale. We should have plenty of buyers, and it appears a good demand for most furs. As the season progresses I will try to keep you up to date with what the buyers are looking for. Right now some items are up in the air but it still looks like there will be a good demand. The buyers that I have talked to want nice prime fur. If it is caught too early it will see some significant reductions in price.

There is going to be a good demand for green fur and frozen animals. Please let me know what you have so arrangements can be made to take care of your frozen animals. There is a good demand for ringtail cats, badger, mink, raccoon, skunk, and just about whatever you bring in. Just let me know and I will try to find a buyer for your frozen animals.

Hope you have a productive season.

Best of luck,

Stan Bassett

NTA Oregon Convention  Utah Report

We just got back from the NTA Western convention in Oregon. It was a really good time. I don’t think that you could have had any better weather. The weather was about as perfect as is possible. It was held in a beautiful location and was extremely well done.

The Oregon Trappers Association did an outstanding job.

There were several vendors and a lot of tailgaters. About anything that you wanted you could find. The antique trap collectors association was also there. If you were looking for collectable traps or were selling them this was the place to be. There were all types of old traps and trapping equipment to be had. It was fun to walk through and see all of the trapping history that was there.

The vendors had all types of lures, traps and supplies. The UTA booth was in between High Plains Lures and Halseths  Lures. Needless to say there was a very unique odor that we were in. If you know Dirk Miller and are around his booth you know the smell that I am talking about. Dirk has some strong and unique smelling lures. They might be well worth trying out.

At the UTA booth we raffled off a rifle. This was a rifle that was donated by UTA member Gary Slot. He was generous enough to give this rifle to the UTA to be raffled to help out the association. The UTA sold a lot of tickets and the proceeds from the gun went to support the UTA. Thank you so very much Gary.

The UTA also donated guns for the auctions that were held, as well as one to the Oregon  Trappers Association. Hopefully, the proceeds will help trappers and trapping associations.

The demos were well attended and very informative. They had an excellent demo area that had ponds to ledges in it. I enjoyed all of the demos that I watched. Bob Gillman did a really neat one on trapping bears. I was fascinated and now I realize that someday I will have to trap a bear. Someday I am going to Oregon trap nutria with Bob and maybe we can work a bear into it also. Speaking of nutria, there was a nutria demo that got me salivating. They had some nutria there and they looked like really big muskrats. Now for a muskrat trapper being able to trap an animal that looks like a huge muskrat, well you know I have just got to do it.

Something that was really neat was the antler auction that they had. Members would bring in antler sheds and donate them. Later they were auctioned off and the proceeds went to the Oregon Trappers. What a great idea. I talked with Jim Soares who was working with the sheds and he said it is a great fund raiser for their association. It might be something that our association could do in the future.

I want to thank the Oregon Trappers Association for a job well done. You have made memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you guys so very much.

The UTA convention is coming up in September 9,10 in Nephi. The officers are working hard to make it a nice one for all of us. They have some excellent demos lined up, as well as contests, good food, and awards. I strongly encourage you to try to attend. They have a fun weekend planned for us. And as you get older and older those fun weekends become more and more special. Hope to see you there.

Best of luck, Stan

News from DWR on Fur Harvester's Education Program:

As you may have heard, we have dropped the hunter education instructor prerequisite to become a furharvester education instructor. I want trappers teaching the furharvester education program.

We now have a new student manual and soon will be launching an online internet based course.

The instructor application, instructor training schedule, and instructor guidebook is posted on the Division web site.
