Well here I am again sitting in front of this computer trying to write another President’s report, which is kind of stupid because as President you are allowed to delegate. But, someone told me if I did that, then it would not be the Presidents report. In the future I will try to find a way around that technicality.
We have been kind of busy this last month or so. I have been writing letters to the D.W.R. about the Otter introduction, the non-protected species issue, and the problem we had with them tagging cats at our fur sale this year. All of these letters seemed to fall on deaf ears. However we did receive some advice on how to proceed with getting these issues resolved from the head of the D.N.R. and we will be following up on this in the near future.
Ronnie and I were asked by the President of The N.T.A. to attend the leadership council meeting in Las Vegas to discuss the problems we had with the National Convention we hosted last June. We met with President Kaatz , Vice President Owen and the N.T.A office manager Dave Roberts. It was a very productive meeting that lasted over two hours. Many of the problems we had have already been resolved and we have been assured that they are working on ways to correct the rest. Our voices were heard loud and clear and because of this, the next host states should have a better opportunity for success. We also found out that a misplaced or lost letter from Vice President Owen to Dave Roberts was the reason that the article on the N.T.A. convention in Nephi was not published. They are very sorry about this and even though it is late, it will be in the next issue of the American Trapper.
The next item we have been working on is some rules for next years fur sale. As most of you know the last few years our fur sale has become very large. In fact, if you go by total number of pelts, we are the largest sale in the west. Being this large has created some problems that we felt we needed to get on top of as soon as possible. I decided that it would be better to have a committee set up the rules rather than the officers, so I put together a ten-member committee. This committee consists of three officers and seven members that work the sale every year and are very familiar with the problems faced at the sale every year. The committee met in March and we had a very good and productive meeting. We made some new rules for the sellers as well as new rules for the buyers. We realized that some of these rules might take a little getting use to but we feel it is the only way we can continue to have a sale this large. The first draft of these rules has been drawn up and sent out to the committee for review. In the next month we will make any changes the committee feels are needed. As soon as the finale draft is made, we will send it out to all the members.
Our campout will be June 26-27-28 up on top of Huntington canyon at the Lake Canyon campground. If anyone would like to discuss any of the above items, this would be a good time to do it. I would much rather talk than write and the campout is a great place to sit and shoot the breeze. Hope to see you there.
The election ballots will be opened and counted April 25th. The original date of 4/11/09 had conflicts that couldn't be resolved.
The campout week-end has been set for June 26, 27, & 28th. It will be held up Fairview/Huntington canyons at Lake Canyon campground. We will get better directions and more details posted later. http://www.utahoutdooractivities.com/lakecanyon.html
The 2009 fur sale was a good sale. As you can see by comparing this years stats to last years
(on this page down lower), the prices were down considerably, but better than some had feared due to the economy.
Kevin wants everyone that helped to know how much the officers (and other members) appreciate all the hard work they did. There were just too many to name individually, but you know who you are.
The donated fur/scholarship program did very well and by adding a little $ from last year there is enough for 2 $1000 scholarships. Ken and his family did a great job.
If you have a family member that qualifies for the scholarship, keep checking on the bottom of this page for updated applications and other information. I expect more info from Stacy Dew any time now.
It was decided to hold the summer campout up at the good old spot (can't remember the name) up Fairview Canyon.
Get yer shootin eye all tuned up. More info to come as plans get firmed up.
If any members know of a veteran or family of a veteran that needs some assistance or that can use some help, please contact one of the officers.
It was good to see Ol' Paul Snyder from down Dixie way again. Looks like he has another generation of trappers coming up to get him going again. We sure didn't get much time to harass Tony Martineau. He was in-n-out in a blink.
For me at least, the best part of any UTA function is seeing old friends and making new ones.
Thanks again to all those that helped in any way.
Theron

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION ► Each year the UTA selects one or two students who exemplify our organizations beliefs in conservation and our love of the outdoors.
We then have the privilege to grant those worthy students a scholarship to assist them in financing their college educations.
The scholarship funds are directly collected from the generosity of our associations members each year, so it truly is a special program.
