We cannot predict the future but it looks like fur prices should be as good as or better than last year and want to remind you that you are responsible for your no sale or unsold pelts. All no sale fur will become property of the UTA unless arrangements are made for the fur to be picked up no later than at the end of Sunday’s sale.

For a different twist this year we in conjunction with the sale will be sponsoring a fur harvester Educator class for new instructors. If you have a desire to instruct fur harvester classes or know of someone that does then this will be an excellent chance to get state certified. It will be a condensed class and will be completed on Saturday afternoon. This will be an authorized training with the DWR and we feel it will be a great opportunity to get recertified or to become certified for the first time.

For those who are interested for more information please contact Kent Fowden 801-404-6511, Kirk Smith 801-538-4725 (DWR) or Stan Bassett 435-245-4508.  The DWR needs to know how many people want to attend so that they can have the packets for each person. There will be no charge.

As members of the UTA this is your sale it takes an awful lot of work to put on and your help would be greatly appreciated it you would like to help please give one of the officers a call.

Look forward to seeing you there.

 Your UTA officers

We want to welcome you to the Utah Trappers fur sale. The sale will run Friday February 10 through Sunday February 12. The sale will be at the Nephi County fairgrounds in Nephi, Utah. We will begin to take fur in the early afternoon on Friday.

Remember to call in and reserve you spot in the sale. It is important to call in with your pelt totals, so that the buyers will know what to expect on the fur volume. Call in dates will be January 7 through February 7, 2012. Contact people are:

 Stan Bassett                           435- 245- 4508

 Kent Fowden                         801- 404 -6511

 Herb Carter                             435- 623- 0718

 Travis Siefers                        435- 691- 8728

 James Butterfield 1-435-220-0126

On Saturday we will be having a membership meeting to discuss association business. Plan on attending to find out what is going on in the association as well as to discuss state trapping issues.

Don’t forget to donate a pelt or two for the scholarship fund. All proceeds from the donated fur go to the scholarship fund. Anyone that donates a pelt will be eligible to win some traps or other prizes.

There will be an outlet to sell frozen whole animals or frozen pelts. When you sell frozen animals the buyer will pay all commissions. If you have frozen fur call Stan Bassett 435-245-4508 and let him know what you are going to bring so arrangements can be made for your frozen pelts.

A brief summary of the fur sale rules are as follows:

 1. Sellers must call in advance to reserve a spot in the sale

2. Sellers must be a member of the UTA to sell (you may purchase a membership on site prior to the sale)

3. Sellers must agree with terms and conditions of the sale.

4. Bobcats must have the permanent DWR tag affixed before lots are assigned. The DWR will be tagging bobcats at the sale.

5. Due to space constraints, single pelt lots will be held to a minimum, lots of two or more

Shall be tied together we will have string available for this.

6. Absolutely no one except authorized UTA personnel will be allowed on the sale floor.

Pictures will not be allowed other than those taken by the UTA historian.

7. A 4% commission will be charged for all pelts that are sold. A 1%commission will be charged for all no sales.

UTAH TRAPPERS  FUR SALE   FEBRUARY 2012

The trapping season is in full swing and the weather has been wonderful. Very easy access due to lack of snow. But with the lack of snow means that it is much harder to find tracks and to find furbearer travel routes. It just presents a new and different challenge.

Fur sale dates are February 10, 11 and 12 in Nephi. You will be able to check in your fur on Friday and Saturday and the sale will be on Saturday and Sunday. Try to get there early to beat the rush and plan on spending a fun day.

It is important to consign your fur to the sale. This doesn’t mean that you have to sell it but it gives the buyers a good idea on what to expect as to volume of fur that they will have to bid on. This really helps the trapper, because if the buyers know how much fur and what species there is they can find more outlets for our fur. It is a win win for all concerned. If you call in and consign your fur and then catch more, you can still bring it. You will not be turned away.  The following people are the people to call to consign your fur:   Herb Carter-435-623-0718

         Travis Seifers-435-691-8728

         Kent Fowden- 801-404-6511

         Stan Bassett- 435-245-4508

You can consign your fur January 7 through February 7.

Remember to donate a pelt or two to the scholarship fund. All of the money goes for a good cause. All that donate are eligible for prizes that will be drawn for.

If you are bringing frozen fur or whole animals please call me prior to the sale. I need to know what is coming so that arrangements can be made for you frozen pelts. There is a good demand for ringtail cats, mink, badger, raccoon, some beaver,  gray fox, and civit cats. If you have something let me know and I will try to find  a buyer for you. If you sell your fur frozen you will pay no commission. The buyers pay all commissions on frozen fur. Phone 435-245-4508    wildfurs@live.com

The DWR will be there to tag bobcats. Also, there will be a general membership meeting. The officers will discuss upcoming events. Try to attend.

There will be a Fur Harvester Instructor course taught at the fur sale. It will be on Saturday afternoon. I currently don’t have an exact time but, plan on Saturday. If you need a new certification or if you have never instructed this will be your chance to get it completed. I have been an instructor since it began. It is a good program and it needs actual trappers as instructors. This is a great opportunity for trappers as well as the people over fur harvester  education. I know Gary Cook and Kirk Smith very well. They are over the fur harvester education program. They are good people and will do a good job. If you want to instruct or know of someone that does please let us know and we will reserve a spot for you. For more information call  Kent Fowden or Stan Bassett.

I hope to and look forward to seeing you there.

Best of luck, Stan Bassett  435-245-4508  wildfurs@live.com

Important Information:

Attention Fellow Trappers,

In the past few months the NTA has been forwarded multiple names, numbers, and email address from trappers that have been contacted by a host of different production companies, all with a grand idea of the perfect way to represent trapping and trappers through various scripts and story lines. We have asked that our affiliates pass the word to their members and to be weary of these people until some investigation can be accomplished. The NTA has asked Dave and Karen Linkhart to take the lead on these and do the investigations as those who are on the up and up and those who may have a history of distorting the facts. Thus far we have been fortunate because those with suspicious intentions seem to drop away when challenged but more concerning is when they shift gears and begin to wave potential stardom in front of one of us. It is very difficult to resist the temptation but please forward the information to us. If things seem to be legitimate, we will gladly assist in making the opportunity a positive experience. Please beware!

Respectfully,
Kraig Kaatz

 Welcome

We are glad to have you as our guest. The mission of the Utah Trappers Association is to promote our privilege of trapping in an ethical manner. It is the responsibility of us as trappers to do all that we can to help insure that our rich heritage of trapping will be passed on from one generation to the next.

We want this to be a fun web site as well as an informative one. Information will be provided on upcoming events as well as past events. Instruction on fur handling as well as humane sets will be included. The UTA feels it is important to place strong emphasis that the wildlife that we catch should be treated with the utmost respect. This respect begins before we ever set a trap and carries on in the pelt preparation and handling.

If you are not a member of the UTA or another state or national trapping organization, we strongly encourage you to do so. The future of trapping depends on strong state and national trapping organizations.

The UTA has 4 traditional activities each year. These are:

 *  Convention/Rendezvous....held Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday morning each year, the week-end following Labor Day in Sept., at the Juab County Fairgrounds in Nephi. A General Membership Meeting is typically held early Saturday afternoon. The awards banquet is held Saturday evening. The raffle drawing will be held on Sat. night. There are contests, demos, vendors and lots of fun. AND, the price is right: FREE ADMISSION (except for the Awards Banquet. A potluck dish or small fee may be charged).

 * Fur Sale....This is typically held on the second week-end in February at the Juab County Fairgrounds in Nephi. A General Membership Meeting is typically held early Saturday afternoon. Here members bring their pelts to be sold at auction. We have a great reputation as one of the best fur sales nationwide.

 *  Summer Camp Out is typically held Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday in the later part of June. We vary the locations from year to year. This is a very informal get-together. This activity is for fun and relaxation without all the work associated with the other activities. We usually have a shooting contest, horse shoe tournament and dutch-oven pot luck. A General Membership Meeting is typically held early Saturday afternoon.

 *  Youth Coyote Hunt...This is a coyote calling contest that involves the kids. One of the requirements of joining the contest is having a kid on your team. This is one of the most popular contests around and has very good support from members and sponsors and is sure to please any and all kids that participate. This is typically held in November and the hunt headquarters is the Juab County Fairgrounds in Nephi. A General Membership Meeting is NOT typically held.
